A brief history of Spandex

It wasn't all that long ago when Spandex was first introduced to the clothing industry.

A synthetic fiber was invented by chemist, Joseph Shivers, in 1958 in the state of Virginia. Thanks Joe! And in 1962 it became available on the market know by the clothing industry as Spandex, Lycra or elastane. Fun fact: Did you know that the name "spandex" is an anagram of the work "expands".

Spandex is now used in a wide range of apparel lines internationally that need significant stretch and elasticity. Starting in the 1960's articles of clothing like swimwear, exercise apparel, wetsuits, cycling shorts, bra straps and most athletic clothing were made with Spandex or a spandex blend. The women's spandex bodysuit, aerobic wear, and leotards and tights became very popular in the 70's and 80's.

The spandex body suit has made a comeback and can be found in most online womens apparel stores today. They can be made from spandex blend materials and tend to have considerable stretch to fit many different body types. You can search google for images of the many different types of spandex bodysuit available. You can find a ski racing suit in every color and in multiple designs for every occasion!
